Despite their shared color, black cat breeds are more diverse than you might think. Discover nine unique breeds and what makes each of them special.
Mysterious and striking, black cats have long captured our imaginations. Though often associated with superstition and bad luck in some cultures, many places celebrate black cats as symbols of good fortune. In Japan, a black cat crossing your path is considered lucky, while in historical England, they were given as wedding gifts to bring good luck. In Norse mythology, Freya, the goddess of love and beauty, rode in a chariot pulled by two black cats.
While their dark coats and glowing eyes may seem to give them a common look, black cats actually come in a variety of breeds, each with its own unique traits. The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes 23 breeds that can have solid black coats, ranging from long-haired to hairless.
Teresa Keiger, a judge for The Cat Fanciers’ Association, emphasizes that while black cats may share a common color, their temperaments are as varied as their breeds. “Black is just one of several colors and patterns,” Keiger explains. “Each breed has its own distinct personality.”
Here are nine breeds often seen in black, along with their unique characteristics.
1. Bombay
The Bombay is the only cat breed that’s almost exclusively black. With short, sleek fur and copper or green eyes, this breed looks like a miniature panther. Bombays are playful, energetic, and love to be the center of attention.
2. Japanese Bobtail
Known for her short, stubby tail (less than three inches long), the Japanese Bobtail is a friendly and social breed. She has muscular back legs that make her a skilled jumper and enjoys participating in family activities, from kitchen chores to office work.
3. British Shorthair
The British Shorthair comes in many colors, but their black variety stands out with striking gold or copper eyes. This breed is known for its calm and easygoing nature, making it a perfect companion for families with other pets.
4. American Curl
Easily identified by her distinctive curled-back ears, the American Curl is a playful, intelligent cat that loves being around people and other pets. Black American Curls may have eyes in any color, including beautiful shades of green or yellow.
5. Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex stands out with his bat-like ears and kitten-like personality, which he keeps well into adulthood. With a soft, fine-textured coat, the black Cornish Rex is full of energy and easy to care for.
6. Exotic Shorthair
The Exotic Shorthair is often described as a Persian with short hair. This breed has the same sweet, laid-back personality as the Persian but without the high-maintenance grooming. Black Exotics have large, round copper eyes and are known for their entertaining, social nature.
7. Sphynx
Though hairless, the Sphynx can still be considered black due to her soft, suede-like skin. Known for her distinctive wrinkles and loving, active personality, this breed enjoys both amusing her humans and cuddling up for warmth.
8. American Shorthair
The American Shorthair’s golden eyes pop against its jet-black coat. This popular, low-maintenance breed is affectionate and ideal for families, with a personality that’s sweet and agreeable.
9. Oriental Shorthair
The Oriental Shorthair comes in every possible color, including black. Highly intelligent and curious, this breed is known for being quite vocal and loves to be involved in every household activity—whether invited or not.
These nine breeds show that while black cats may share a common color, their personalities and quirks make them as diverse and lovable as any other cat breed.
