Companion Animal Network Australia (CANA) has introduced the Pets in Business program, designed to assist employers in establishing pet-friendly policies.
Currently, 64% of workplaces lack policies to accommodate pets, and the Pets in Business program aims to develop guidelines that cater to the needs of businesses, non-pet owners, and pet-owning staff.
Trish Ennis, CEO of CANA, emphasized the growing importance of pets in Australians’ lives. “With many employees now splitting their workweek between home and the office, it’s no surprise that people want to bring their pets to work as well.”
Research indicates that 85% of Australian dog owners would be more inclined to go into the office if they could bring their pets. Additionally, 63% of employees in pet-friendly workplaces report being “very satisfied” with their work environment, which is double the satisfaction rate of those in non-pet-friendly workplaces.
“Creating a pet-friendly workplace requires balancing the interests and rights of all employees, ensuring the welfare of the animals, and managing associated liability risks,” said Ennis. She noted that not all workplaces are suitable for pets, such as those with high-risk machinery. Certain animals, like snakes, spiders, and uncaged rabbits, are also prohibited due to potential hazards. All pets must be well-trained and non-disruptive, including dogs that may react to other people or animals.
CANA’s Pets in Business program offers free resources to support workplaces, including Pet Resume, Pet-Friendly Workplace and Pet-Free Zone Posters, Rules for Pets and Humans, and an Office Pet Roster.
“As some companies face challenges in encouraging employees to spend more time on site, implementing a pet-friendly policy might be the ideal solution to create happier and more productive workplaces,” Ennis added.
